How to Keep Your Door Locks Protected

Back To Blog

It is true that modern home door locks have been made to last and to withstand the adverse effects of the elements. However, this does not mean that they do not require additional protection. With a little bit of extra care, you extend their useful life and ensure that they operate properly at all times. Find out how to provide it properly.

General Protection

Inspect all locks and keys regularly - You have to watch out for wear and tear, rust and deformation. Look closely at each lock's cylinder, latching and strike plate. Determine whether each key blade is straight. Inspect the shoulder and cuts for dullness and chipping. In case of serious damage or deformation, timely lock and/or key repair will be required. How to Keep Your Door Locks Protected

Provide cleaning and lubrication - Dust is removed with the use of a vacuum cleaner. The thinner the attachment the better. A solution with water and household detergent is sufficient for cleaning all external lock components. Rinsing and drying are essential as well. Pre-boiled white vinegar is an excellent rust remover. Only the mildest solvent must be used for grease removal. Use graphite-based or silicone-based lubricant for each door lock cylinder. Squeeze a sufficient amount of it inside the keyhole and turn the key inside several times.

Use locks with care - Never use the key as a door handle. If the lock is sticky, provide lubrication instead of applying force. Explain to young children that door locksets are not playthings and do not let them operate or play with these devices. Keep keys safe at all times.

Special Protection

Provide coverage during home repair and renovation works - Apply paper covers over both sides of external and internal door locks to protect them from dust and dirt particles. Secure the covers with scotch tape which is easy to remove. Do not miss to apply paper covers to the strike plates if the doors will remain open during the project. Make sure that all locksets are effectively protected. After the project is completed, you should vacuum clean all devices just to be on the safe side.

Winterise all external locks in the autumn - This involves the cleaning and lubrication of all external locking devices including car locks. The lubricant will prevent freezing during the winter months. Once you squeeze lubricant into the lock, you should apply graphite to the key as well. This can be done with the use of a pencil if you do not have powder at hand. In this way, the risk of freezing will be reduced even further. In general, the earlier you prepare the external locksets for the winter the better.

It is important that you follow all of these instructions for the protection of locksets strictly so that you can get the best result.
